Senegal edged Mali 1–0 to book a place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a tense, hard-fought quarter-final decided by a first-half strike and late defensive resolve.
Senegal struck in the 27th minute when Iliman Ndiaye reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area, calmly firing home after sustained Senegalese pressure. It proved decisive in a contest defined by physical battles, missed chances and dramatic late moments.
Mali’s task became significantly harder just before the interval when Yves Bissouma was sent off after picking up a second yellow card, leaving the Eagles to chase the game with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mali pushed forward bravely, creating openings through set pieces and long-range efforts.
Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra delivered a series of outstanding saves to keep Mali in contention, denying Sadio Mané and Lamine Camara during a frantic closing spell.
At the other end, Edouard Mendy was equally assured, producing a crucial stop from close range to preserve Senegal’s narrow lead.
As the clock ticked into seven minutes of added time, Mali threw everything forward, but Senegal’s defence, marshalled by Kalidou Koulibaly, held firm under sustained pressure.
The final whistle confirmed Senegal’s passage into the semi-finals and underlining their reputation for composure in high-stakes knockout matches.
