Nigeria booked a place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in their quarter-final clash on Saturday, producing a disciplined and clinical performance that underlined their title credentials.

The Super Eagles struck early in the second half through Victor Osimhen, who powered home a close-range header in the 47th minute after Bruno Onyemaechi’s dangerous cross evaded the Algerian goalkeeper.

Nigeria doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Osimhen turned provider, releasing Akor Adams, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper before lifting the ball into the net.

From that moment, Nigeria were firmly in control. Algeria, led by the experienced Riyad Mahrez, struggled to break down a well-organised Nigerian defence, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali largely untroubled despite late pressure.

Nigeria dominated key statistics, recording a vastly superior number of shots on target and controlling possession for long spells, particularly after taking the lead.

Midfielders Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi dictated play before Ndidi was forced off through injury, prompting a reshuffle by head coach Eric Chelle.

Algeria attempted to respond with a series of substitutions, but Nigeria’s defensive unit, marshalled by Calvin Bassey, stood firm to see out the contest.
