Delhi, the capital city of India, is experiencing a severe cold wave with temperatures plunging below 4 degrees Celsius in several areas, causing discomfort across the city.

Local media reports on Sunday quoted data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as revealing that several parts of the city were recording minimum temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius.

Aya Nagar was said to be the coldest station, logging a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Palam and the Ridge also reported readings close to the cold wave threshold.

Weather observations at 8.30 am showed Safdarjung recording a minimum of 4.8 degrees Celsius, Palam 3.0 degrees Celsius, Lodi Road 4.6 degrees Celsius and the Ridge 3.7 degrees Celsius, indicating a sharp dip across most stations.

Maximum temperatures remained below normal, with Palam recording a high of 16.2 degrees Celsius and the Ridge 20 degrees Celsius.

The IMD said cold wave conditions were realised over Delhi, particularly in Palam, the Ridge and Aya Nagar, where minimum temperatures fell significantly below normal.

India Today reported that a yellow alert has been issued for the city, warning that cold wave conditions are likely to continue on Monday, along with moderate to dense fog during morning hours.

Delhi had recorded its coldest morning of the winter on Saturday, with the Safdarjung observatory registering a minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest January reading in the city since 2024.
