Fubara, Wike Clash: President Tinubu wades in
Quick Read
The President is conscious of the delicate balance required: Fubara commands widespread support among the grassroots, while Wike remains a powerful figure capable of swaying political loyalty when engaged, BKO explained.
President Bola Tinubu has stepped into the growing political tension in Rivers State between Governor Siminal Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.
The intervention comes amid the impeachment process initiated by the Rivers House of Assembly against Governor Fubara and his deputy, after allegations of gross misconduct were levelled against the governor. The Rivers Assembly noted that the impeachment notice was endorsed by 26 lawmakers, who argued that the actions cited amounted to violations of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaking on TVC today, the channel’s newly appointed Director of News, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju (BKO), said the President’s move is aimed at balancing and retaining the influence of both Fubara and Wike ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He explained that if the situation is not managed, the president might be the biggest ‘loser’ in the case.
BKO said, the President is conscious of the delicate balance required: Fubara commands widespread support among the grassroots, while Wike remains a powerful figure capable of swaying political loyalty when engaged.
He noted that both Wike and Fubara have, in the past, exchanged harsh words publicly, escalating the potential for political fallout. According to BKO, Tinubu’s involvement appears designed to manage the situation carefully, prevent the rift from deepening, and ensure party cohesion in Rivers State as the nation gears up for the 2027 elections.
BKO added that Fubara has yet to make any public comments since the impeachment notice was served, as discussions continue behind the scenes to navigate the political sensitivities surrounding Wike’s influence.
