Confirming the development, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, said in a statement that schools would remain closed until further notice.

The Edo State Government has announced a suspension of second-term resumption for schools across Edo Central Senatorial District following recent unrest in Ekpoma.

The decision affects both public and private educational institutions in the district and comes in the wake of a violent protest triggered by growing concerns over frequent kidnappings in the area.

Last week’s demonstration in Ekpoma, the headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, left several people injured and led to the vandalism of the palace of the town’s traditional ruler. Reports also indicated that a number of shops were looted, bringing commercial activities in the town to a halt.

Confirming the development, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, said in a statement that schools would remain closed until further notice.

He explained that the government took the decision in order to address pressing issues aimed at safeguarding students and improving their overall welfare.

According to Iyamu, “The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course.

“Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are kindly requested to take note of this development and comply accordingly.”

The state government has not yet indicated when normal academic activities will resume, as security and related concerns in the affected communities continue to be reviewed.
