Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has slammed the arrest and alleged unlawful detention of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, describing it as a dangerous attempt to muzzle youth voices and stifle democratic expression.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Kogi Central lawmaker called for the immediate and unconditional release of the students, stressing that peaceful protest is a constitutional right.
“Dialogue, not detention, is the pathway to peace and progress,” she said. “Our youths must not be criminalised for raising concerns about issues affecting their welfare and future.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan condemned the handling of the situation by Edo State authorities, urging them to focus on growing insecurity, including kidnappings and violent crimes, instead of targeting courageous voices.
“The government must prioritise citizens’ safety rather than suppressing young voices,” she added. “Arresting students only deepens public mistrust and widens the gap between the government and the governed.”
The senator reaffirmed her solidarity with the detained students and their families, emphasising her commitment to justice, democratic values, and youth empowerment.
According to reports, the 52 students were among several arrested and arraigned in Benin City on Monday following a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, against insecurity in the state, which turned violent over the weekend.
