Nigeria lost 1–0 to Algeria, the host nation, in the group stage of the tournament.

1990 – Final Loss vs Algeria

Nigeria met Algeria again in the final. Algeria won 1–0, with Chérif Oudjani scoring the only goal. Algeria lifted their first AFCON title.

1992 – Group Stage Win vs Senegal

Nigeria defeated host nation Senegal 2–1 in the group stage, showing strong performance early in the tournament.

The Super Eagles returned to their base on Sunday from Marrakech, where they defeated Algeria 2-0 at the Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.

Nigeria played a draw against Mali, the host nation, during the group stage.

2002 – Third-Place Match Win vs Mali
Nigeria met Mali again in the third-place playoff and won 1–0. Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored the winning goal.

This remains Nigeria’s only knockout win against a host nation at AFCON.
2004 – Semi-Final Draw vs Tunisia
Nigeria drew 1–1 with hosts Tunisia in the semi-final but lost on penalties and failed to reach the final.

2008 – Quarter-Final Loss vs Ghana

Nigeria lost to host nation Ghana in the quarter-finals, ending their run of four straight AFCON semi-final appearances.

2023 – Group Stage Win vs Côte d’Ivoire
Nigeria beat hosts Côte d’Ivoire 1–0 in the group stage. William Troost-Ekong scored from the penalty spot.

 

2023 – Final Loss vs Côte d’Ivoire

Nigeria faced Côte d’Ivoire again in the final but lost 2–1. Troost-Ekong scored first, but Côte d’Ivoire came back to win.
