An Algerian football supporter has been arrested in Marrakech following a security incident during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final match between Algeria and Nigeria.

The incident occurred during a  high-profile match, which attracted thousands of fans from across Africa.

According to local reports, police authorities presented the suspect before the public prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Marrakech on Wednesday.

After reviewing the case, the prosecutor ordered that the suspect be placed in pre-trial detention at Oudaya Prison, pending further investigation. His trial was scheduled to take place on January 15.

Security sources said the arrest was part of broader efforts by Moroccan authorities to maintain order and ensure safety throughout the ongoing AFCON tournament, especially during matches involving large and passionate crowds.

Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that this was not the only incident involving Algerian fans during the same match.

Earlier, two other Algerian nationals were arrested for allegedly tearing and destroying banknotes inside the stadium, an act considered a public order offence.

In a separate but related case, an Algerian YouTuber was also detained after posting a video online showing himself urinating in the stands during Algeria’s group-stage match against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

The video sparked public outrage and prompted swift action by security officials.

Moroccan security agencies have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring that AFCON matches remain safe and respectful for players, officials, and fans alike.
