“Baba Akande has contributed immensely to the growth and development of this country and to the emergence and institutionalisation of democracy,” the President said.
President Bola Tinubu has hailed Chief Bisi Akande, elder statesman and former governor of Osun State, on his 87th birthday, praising his pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and the founding of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu described Baba Akande as a mentor, leader, and tireless advocate for democracy, social justice, and good governance.
“Baba Akande has contributed immensely to the growth and development of this country and to the emergence and institutionalisation of democracy,” the President said.
Tinubu highlighted Akande’s distinguished public service career, noting his tenure as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.
He also acknowledged Akande’s foundational role as the first Chairman of the APC, praising his leadership for laying the groundwork that, in 2015, led to the historic unseating of an incumbent federal government.
“Even at 87, Baba Akande remains a strident advocate, supporter, and fighter for the ideals of democracy, social justice, and good governance,” Tinubu said, adding that Akande’s mentorship and guidance had been instrumental in his own political journey to the presidency.
The President prayed for good health and renewed strength for Akande, commending his continued support for the APC and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
