Eric Chelle gives injury updates on Nwabali, Onyeka ahead of Uganda clash

When asked about who might replace Bassey in the starting XI, Chelle emphasized that his decision would be based on form and suitability for the match.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has heaped praise on centre-back Calvin Bassey following his impressive performances at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

However, the coach also confirmed that Bassey will miss Nigeria’s crucial third-place playoff against Egypt due to suspension.

Bassey received a yellow card in Nigeria’s semifinal defeat to Morocco, ruling him out of Saturday’s showdown with the Pharaohs.

Despite his absence, Chelle remains confident in his squad’s depth and hinted that he has several options to fill the gap in defence.

“Calvin had a fantastic tournament here in Morocco,” Chelle told reporters during his pre-match press briefing.

“Unfortunately, he won’t be available for the Egypt match. We also had Wilfred Ndidi unavailable for the game against Morocco because of suspension.

These are challenges every team faces, but we have quality players who can step in.”

When asked about who might replace Bassey in the starting XI, Chelle emphasized that his decision would be based on form and suitability for the match.

“There are a few players who can take his position,” he explained.

“I need to select the player who will give the team the best chance to succeed against Egypt. It’s about what is best for the team on the day.”

Chelle’s comments come as Nigeria looks to end their AFCON campaign on a high note following a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful run to the semifinals.

The third-place clash offers the Super Eagles a chance to showcase their resilience and depth, particularly in the defensive unit.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see which defender steps up to fill Bassey’s boots and help Nigeria secure a podium finish.
