Ojo also emphasised that Obi is determined to contest the 2027 election as a principal candidate. “If someone says, ‘I will be on the ballot,’ it implies they intend to be the party’s candidate, not second fiddle. That is Peter Obi’s position,” he said.

Public affairs analyst Jide Ojo has said former presidential candidate Peter Obi may leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Ojo said Atiku Abubakar, who joined ADC in November 2025, could outspend Obi, particularly if the party conducts indirect primaries.

“Rumour has it that Atiku has been a very generous spender when it comes to party primaries. Assuming, without conceding, that in a free and fair ADC primary Atiku emerges, I can see Peter Obi likely leaving the party for another platform,” Ojo said.

He added that Atiku is keen on controlling who emerges as the party’s candidate. This, Ojo said, may put Obi at a disadvantage.

The analyst highlighted that Obi’s defection from the Labour Party (LP) to ADC on December 31, 2025, brought new energy to the opposition coalition. “On that day, at least four senators from the Southeast, 16 House of Representatives members, and several State Assembly members defected with him. When Atiku left the PDP weeks earlier, no serving lawmaker or governor followed him,” he noted.

Ojo also emphasised that Obi is determined to contest the 2027 election as a principal candidate. “If someone says, ‘I will be on the ballot,’ it implies they intend to be the party’s candidate, not second fiddle. That is Peter Obi’s position,” he said.
