Sir Shina Peters replies Pastor Ashimolowo over wealth sermon
Legendary Nigerian juju musician Sir Shina Peters has reacted to comments made by Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), following a sermon in which the cleric compared the singer’s financial choices with those of Zenith Bank founder Jim Ovia.
Ashimolowo made the remarks while preaching on wealth, timing and delayed gratification at a recent service at Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA).
In the sermon, he cited an example contrasting the use of ₦20 million by two Nigerians in 1990, one allegedly building a house and the other starting a bank—mentioning Shina Peters and Jim Ovia respectively.
The comments quickly sparked backlash online, with many netizens accusing the cleric of mocking the musician’s career and personal achievements. Veteran singer Daddy Showkey was among those who publicly criticised the comparison.
Reacting to the viral clip in a post on his Instagram Story on Wednesday, Sir Shina Peters described the claims attributed to Ashimolowo as false and derogatory.
While appreciating Daddy Showkey for drawing his attention to the issue, the music icon said he would not pursue legal action.
Shina Peters, who is now also a pastor, explained that his decision was guided by his commitment to the Christian faith and the unity of the body of Christ.
He further noted that God has been faithful to him over the decades, adding that he harbours no ill feelings toward Ashimolowo. According to him, how individuals use their blessings to set good examples is more important than public comparisons.
