The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) rescued a suspected drunk driver from a road traffic crash at Ebute-Ero inward NEPA, Apongbon, Lagos Island.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, confirmed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos.

Giwa said preliminary findings showed the male motorist, believed heavily intoxicated, drove a Honda Jeep, FKJ 562 JF, at high speed.

He said the vehicle rammed into the rear of a moving Scania truck while descending the bridge at Ebute-Ero.

“The violent impact left the driver critically trapped within the mangled wreckage, creating an immediate life-threatening emergency,” Giwa said.

He said LASTMA rescue personnel swiftly mobilised, extracted the trapped driver and handed him over to security operatives.

“The injured driver was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent and comprehensive medical attention.

“To forestall secondary collisions, LASTMA officers cordoned off the scene, managed traffic flow and restored order along the affected axis,” Giwa added.

He said officers from the Ebute-Ero Police Division provided security support during rescue, traffic control and recovery operations.

Giwa added that the vehicles were later handed over to security authorities for investigation and further legal processes.

He expressed concern over the avoidable crash and condemned the reckless conduct that caused the incident.

Giwa reiterated that the Lagos State Government had repeatedly warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol.

He stressed that drinking and driving remained one of the most lethal forms of road indiscipline.

Giwa said such behaviour endangered the driver’s life and exposed innocent road users to needless danger and potential loss of life.
