Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have condemned the killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and warning that it reflects a broader assault on core American values.
In a statement on Sunday, the Obamas said federal law enforcement and immigration agents have challenging responsibilities, but stressed that the public expects them to act “in a lawful, accountable way” and to cooperate with state and local authorities to ensure public safety.
“That’s not what we’re seeing in Minnesota,” the statement said, referring to the fatal shooting of Pretti, 37, which is the second such death caused by a federal officer in Minneapolis this month.
The Obamas criticised the aggressive tactics of masked ICE agents and other federal operatives in urban areas, saying the methods appear designed to intimidate, provoke and endanger residents.
The statement also questioned the response of the current administration, noting that officials “appear unwilling to impose discipline or accountability” on deployed agents. The Obamas described explanations for the shootings as “not informed by any serious investigation” and “directly contradicted by video evidence.”
They called for a change in approach and urged federal authorities to cooperate with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, while also praising the wave of peaceful protests that followed the killings. “Every American should support and draw inspiration from these demonstrations,” the statement said, highlighting citizens’ responsibility to “speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms, and hold our government accountable.”
