All Progressives Congress (APC) flags were hoisted at the Kano State Government House on Monday, signalling the formal return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.
The development follows Yusuf’s resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), ending months of political speculation over his future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yusuf, who is set to formally register as an APC member on Monday alongside lawmakers and local government chairmen, was a key figure in the NNPP’s 2023 electoral success in Kano. He cited governance realities and the need for stronger collaboration with the Federal Government as reasons for his defection.
The governor had previously been a member of the APC between 2014 and 2018 before moving to other political platforms.
Preparations are underway for his reception by APC leaders, with party insiders confirming that Abdullahi Ganduje, national leader of the APC, is expected to return from London to welcome Yusuf in Kano.
A statement by Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Sunday noted that the governor’s decision to return to the APC was informed by prevailing governance realities, national cohesion, and development priorities.
On Monday, Yusuf is expected to register alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state. He is also slated to officially flag off the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano on the same day.
