Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is mourning the tragic loss of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who passed away on Tuesday, following a fatal road accident in Umunede, Delta State, Nigeria.

Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was involved in the crash and was rushed to a hospital in Agbor, also in Delta State, where he was later confirmed dead.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community and beyond, coming just weeks after Ndidi led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Ndidi’s current club, Turkish Süper Lig side Beşiktaş, where he plays as a midfielder, was among the first to publicly confirm the heartbreaking news and express condolences.

In a statement shared via their official X account, the club said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”

Ndidi, who has previously spoken about his close bond with his father, including growing up in a disciplined military environment that shaped his work ethic and love for the game, now faces this profound personal loss.

The former Leicester City star, known for his defensive prowess and leadership on the pitch, has not yet issued a personal public statement, as tributes continue to pour in from fans, teammates, and the broader football fraternity.
