American YouTuber and global livestream star IShowSpeed, real name Darren Jason Watkins Jr., has been granted Ghanaian citizenship following the completion of his month-long tour across Africa.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed that the 21-year-old influencer was issued a Ghanaian passport after authorities confirmed what he described as IShowSpeed’s “irrefutable ties” to the country.
In a statement shared publicly, the minister said the decision followed discussions highlighting the streamer’s growing connection to Ghana and the African continent through his work and cultural engagement.
“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to IShowSpeed,” the statement read.
The minister further praised IShowSpeed for promoting Ghana and Africa positively on the global stage, describing him as a worthy ambassador of the continent.
IShowSpeed recently concluded his Africa Tour, which began on December 29, 2025, and took him to 20 countries across the continent. Through his livestreams, he showcased Africa’s culture, tourism, technology, and everyday life to his over 50 million YouTube subscribers, helping to challenge stereotypes and reshape global perceptions of Africa.
The decision to grant him citizenship is reportedly aligned with Ghana’s Beyond the Return initiative, a programme aimed at strengthening ties with members of the African diaspora and encouraging them to formalise their connection with the country.
