Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has said that being chosen as the Oloja of Lagos-elect is “a call to service” with important responsibilities.

The 72-year-old actor was announced as Oloja of Lagos-elect on January 24, after being presented at the palace of the Elereko.

In a phone interview, Kosoko said he was excited and felt he deserved the selection. It is not yet clear if this new role will affect his acting career.

Fellow actor Bolaji Amusan, also known as Mr Latin, congratulated Kosoko. He said the selection shows that Nollywood actors are responsible and contribute to society.

“Jide is not the only Prince in Lagos or in the Kosoko family, but because of his intelligence and respect in the community, he was chosen as Oloja of Lagos,” Mr Latin said.

Kosoko is the second Nollywood actor to take on a traditional leadership role. Last year, Okey Bakassi became a king in his community in Imo State.

The Oloja of Lagos position had been vacant since the death of Chief Adebola Ige in 2017.

The announcement was made by Mrs Mutiat Ali-Balogun, the Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family.

During the ceremony, she raised Kosoko’s hand in front of the assembly and performed traditional rites and prayers.

She was supported by Deputy Olori Ebi General Oyindamola Ayepola, who also leads the Meshimo Ruling House.
