Barcelona have taken a decisive step to secure one of its brightest homegrown talents for the long term.

Reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the club has officially included a staggering €500 million release clause in the new contract of midfielder Fermín López.

This protective measure comes as part of an improved deal that also features a consistent salary increase for the 22-year-old Spanish international.

The enhancements follow López’s firm rejection of interest from Chelsea toward the end of August, when the Premier League side explored a potential transfer.

López, a product of La Masia academy, has established himself as a key figure in Barcelona’s midfield under manager Hansi Flick. His versatility, work rate, goal-scoring ability from advanced positions, and deep connection to the club’s identity have made him virtually untouchable.

By inserting such a high release clause, among the highest in world football for a player of his profile, Barcelona signal its intent to build around him as a cornerstone of the project.

The move aligns with the club’s broader strategy of safeguarding its youth talents amid ongoing financial prudence and competitive pressures in La Liga and Europe.

López’s loyalty was evident earlier, as he previously turned down approaches from other clubs to stay and commit his future to the Blaugrana.

The contract extension builds on prior renewals, including one in late 2024 that set a €500m clause initially.
