The LAWMA boss stressed that household waste collection in the state remained the responsibility of registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, urging residents to avoid patronising cart pushers.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has apprehended several cart pushers caught dumping refuse illegally along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in the Ojo area of Lagos.
The arrests followed the discovery of an illegal refuse site during a routine patrol by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement Team attached to the Ijora–Seme Division.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Saturday, LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Mukaila Sanusi, said the suspects were arrested in the act of disposing waste unlawfully.
“The arrests were made after our enforcement team discovered an unauthorised dumpsite along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway during a routine monitoring exercise,” Sanusi said.
He noted that the operation was coordinated by the Head of the Ijora-Seme Division, Mr Oladeji Adebayo.
Sanusi also quoted the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who warned that the activities of unlicensed waste handlers continued to endanger public health and the environment.
“Waste disposal through unregulated handlers degrades the environment and undermines the structured waste management system put in place by the Lagos State Government,” Gbadegesin said.
The LAWMA boss stressed that household waste collection in the state remained the responsibility of registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, urging residents to avoid patronising cart pushers.
“Those involved in illegal dumping will be arrested and prosecuted,” he added.
Gbadegesin assured residents that enforcement and surveillance would continue across key locations, advising them to properly bag waste, register with approved operators and report offenders through LAWMA’s official platforms.
In a related post on its official X handle, the agency warned that “waste disposal through unregulated handlers is illegal,” adding that enforcement operations were ongoing statewide.
