Fast-rising Nigerian soprano Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanya Music, has died following a snakebite at her residence in Lugbe, Abuja. She was 25.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, January 31, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s music community and across social media.
Gifted with a rich, sonorous voice often likened to a nightingale’s, Ifunanya had built a growing following, particularly on TikTok, and had performed at events attended by top government officials.
Reports indicate that after being bitten by a snake, the young singer made desperate efforts to save her life.
She reportedly drove herself to two different hospitals in Abuja, including the Federal Medical Centre, in search of urgent medical attention.
However, she was allegedly turned away after being told that anti-venom, the critical, life-saving treatment for snakebites, was unavailable.
Disturbingly, this was not the first time a snake had been sighted in or around her apartment. Videos circulating online show a snake catcher holding a cobra said to have been found inside her room. Voices heard in the background suggest there may have been more snakes in the house, echoing earlier complaints by the late singer that she had seen “a grown snake” in her home. Unconfirmed reports on Facebook further claimed that two snakes were eventually discovered in the apartment.
Following her death, members of the Abuja choral and gospel music community took to social media to mourn her loss. While some described the incident as “not ordinary,” many others focused on celebrating her extraordinary talent, describing her as a gifted vocalist whose career was clearly on the rise.
As reactions poured in, social media was also awash with speculation, including claims of spiritual or supernatural involvement. However, no evidence has been provided to support such assertions.
As of the time of filing this report, neither health authorities nor the police had issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding her death, and it remains unclear whether a formal investigation has been launched.
Friends and fans remember Ifunanya as a vibrant young artiste with immense promise. Her sudden death has once again cast a harsh spotlight on Nigeria’s fragile emergency response system, particularly the alarming lack of essential, life-saving drugs such as anti-venom in hospitals, even within the Federal Capital Territory.
