“I’m greatly troubled” – Pope warns as US–Cuba tensions rise

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over rising tensions between Cuba and the United States, warning that any escalation could worsen the suffering of the Cuban people.

In a tweet posted on his official X handle, @Pontifex, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Pontiff said he was “greatly troubled” by developments between the two neighbouring countries.

“I echo the message of the Cuban bishops, inviting all responsible parties to promote a sincere and effective dialogue, in order to avoid violence and every action that could increase the suffering of the dear Cuban people,” the Pope said.

The Pope’s intervention comes amid growing diplomatic strain between Washington and Havana, raising fears of renewed hostilities and economic hardship for ordinary Cubans.

By aligning himself with the Cuban Catholic bishops, Pope Leo XIV urged restraint, dialogue and peaceful engagement, stressing that violence or aggressive actions would only deepen the humanitarian challenges already facing the Caribbean nation.

The Vatican has traditionally played a mediating role in international conflicts, particularly involving Cuba, and the Pope’s message is expected to add moral pressure on both governments to de-escalate tensions and return to the negotiating table.
