Ten-man Brentford dented Aston Villa’s Premier League title hopes after claiming a hard-fought 1–0 victory at Villa Park on Sunday.

Despite playing most of the match with 10 men, the Bees held firm to hand Villa a second consecutive home league defeat.

Brentford were reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute when Kevin Schade was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Matty Cash. However, the dismissal failed to unsettle the visitors.

Just three minutes later, Dango Ouattara stunned the home crowd with a fine strike in first-half stoppage time, curling the ball into the top corner to give Brentford a shock lead.

Aston Villa thought they had equalised shortly after the restart through Tammy Abraham, but the goal was ruled out following a lengthy VAR review, with officials judging that the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

Villa pressed for an equaliser but struggled to break down a disciplined Brentford defence, which stood firm until the final whistle.

The defeat leaves Villa third on the table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal, while Brentford moved up to seventh, four points off the top five, ending a run of two straight league losses.
