Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that demolishing homes or forcing people to leave waterfront communities like Makoko is illegal.
Falana spoke on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television. He said Nigerians have a right to housing and dignity, and government must respect these rights.
According to him, if the government wants to demolish any community, it must first talk to the residents and provide alternative housing for them.
Falana also condemned the use of tear gas on peaceful protesters, saying there was no legal reason for it.
He explained that he has handled demolition-related cases in Lagos for over 35 years. He added that the Supreme Court ruled two years ago that state governments do not control inland waterways. Because of this, he said demolishing homes in waterfront areas is illegal.
Falana said development is not the problem, but government actions must be humane, as required by law.
“You cannot invade a community at night, use tear gas, confuse people, and then start destroying their homes. That is not allowed by law,” he said.
He stressed that Nigerians have the right to dignity and shelter, and any demolition must come with proper discussion and resettlement plans.
