The Metropolitan Police has formally launched an investigation into a 72-year-old former government minister for alleged misconduct in public office, following the latest large-scale release of court documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The probe was triggered after the United States Department of Justice recently unsealed millions of additional pages from the Epstein case.

The newly released files reportedly contain emails and communications that appear to show the former minister sent sensitive UK government information and economic briefings to Epstein while he held a senior ministerial position.

Commander Ella Marriott of the Metropolitan Police confirmed the development in a statement: “Following the further release of millions of court documents in relation to Jeffrey Epstein by the United States Department of Justice, the Met received a number of reports into alleged misconduct in public office including a referral from the UK Government.

“I can confirm that the Metropolitan Police has now launched an investigation into a 72-year-old man, a former Government Minister, for misconduct in public office offences.

“The Met will continue to assess all relevant information brought to our attention as part of this investigation and won’t be commenting any further at this time.”

The allegations centre on claims that the former minister improperly shared market-sensitive or confidential government material with Epstein during the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.

The UK Cabinet Office is understood to have reviewed the documents and passed relevant material to the police.

No arrests have been made so far.
