He was 55.
Taracena, who also starred in Netflix’s crime series Narcos: Mexico, died on Tuesday, though details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.
Born on March 27, 1970, in Mexico City, Taracena developed an early passion for the performing arts. He studied dramatic arts and trained extensively as a dancer, a background that shaped the physical intensity and precision that defined his acting career.
He built a strong foundation in theatre, performing in over 30 stage productions with the Theatre Myth group and at various Latin American theatre festivals before gaining international recognition with his breakout role as Middle Eye in Apocalypto (2006).
Following the success of the film, Taracena appeared in several Hollywood productions, including The Mexican (2001) and Man on Fire (2004). His notable Mexican film credits include The Violin (2005), Sin Nombre (2009), and Saving Private Perez (2011).
On television, he delivered memorable performances in El Pantera, Queen of the South, Perseguidos, and Narcos: México, where he was praised for his portrayal of complex cartel characters.
His final screen appearance was in Prime Video’s Comerra (2025).
A three-time Ariel Awards nominee, Taracena was regarded as a major force in Mexican cinema. His death has sparked tributes from the National Association of Actors, the Mexican Academy of Film Arts, colleagues, and fans, who described him as a deeply sincere and powerful performer.
