Senate confirms elevation of Justice Oyewole to Supreme Court

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Justice Joseph Oyewole as a justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria following presentation of the report by of its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Sen. Adegbonmire Ayodele (APC, Ondo Central).

President Bola Tinubu had, in January, requested the senate to confirm Oyewole as a Supreme Court justice.

The President’s request, according to the letter, is in pursuant to section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Ayodele, after the presentation, moved that the senate receive and consider the report of the committee on the confirmation of the nomination of Oyewole as a justice of the nation’s apex court.

In a voice vote, the senate confirmed the nomination of Oyewole as justice of the Supreme Court.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, congratulated the nominee on the new elevation and commended the committee for a job well done.

The National Judicial Council (NJC), had at its 110th Meeting held on 13 January 2026 recommended Justice Oyewole for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, alongside 35 other candidates for various judicial offices across the country.

Hon. Justice Oyewole is currently the presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division.

Meanwhile, the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke had in a statement, described the appointment of Justice to the Supreme Court as a bold affirmation of his capabilities to effectively dispense justice in the highest court in the country.

Adeleke described the jurist as an embodiment of integrity. He noted that his elevation to the Supreme Court bench will further empower the court to effectively deliver justice to Nigerians.

“I heartily congratulate Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole on his appointment to the bench of the Supreme Court. Hon. Justice Oyewole is an embodiment of integrity and his commitment to justice is unparalleled,” Governor Adeleke noted in a congratulatory note.

The Governor described Oyewole’s elevation to the topmost court as a proud moment for the people of Osun State.

“On behalf of the good people of the state, I celebrate this remarkable achievement. Going by his antecedents in effectively and dispassionately dispensing justice in over two decades on the bench, I have no iota of doubt that Hon. Justice Oyewole will excel in this new role,” the Governor said.
