The incident occurred at the campus of De Montfort University at about 5pm on Monday, triggering what authorities described as a “very serious incident” and leading to the lockdown of several surrounding streets.
Four ambulances and an air ambulance were deployed to the scene, and the victim was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police confirmed that an 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
The Sun reports that the victim was a student of De Montfort University and is believed to have been involved in an altercation in the street prior to the stabbing.
According to police, another man involved in the confrontation left the scene before officers arrived.
The Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University, Professor Katie Normington, confirmed the death and described the incident as devastating for the university community. She said the institution was offering direct support to students, staff and the victim’s family.
“We are devastated to confirm the tragic death of one of our students,” she said.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened. We are working closely with the police as they investigate this major incident,” she added.
Detectives from Leicestershire Police have launched a murder probe and maintained a cordon around the scene overnight and into Tuesday. Several roads remain closed, causing major disruption in the area, including delays around the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, said police were working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
She appealed to members of the public who witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam or mobile phone footage to come forward.
