The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is facing mounting public backlash after allegations emerged that one of its officers unlawfully detained and sexually assaulted a young Nigerian woman for several days.
The controversy follows an investigative report by journalist Fisayo Soyombo, which alleged that a 21-year-old woman from Akwa Ibom State was arrested by an immigration officer identified as Isa Makama.
According to the report, the woman alleged that she was held for days and repeatedly assaulted during the period. She was also quoted as claiming that other young women were present at the location during the time.
The allegations have since sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding immediate action and justice for the alleged victim.
Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Immigration Service said it has launched a full investigation into the claims.
In a statement posted online, the Service described the allegations as extremely serious, stressing that any form of misconduct by its personnel is unacceptable and against its core values and professional standards.
“The Service has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, and any personnel found to have engaged in the misconduct will be held accountable and appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be applied,” the statement read.
The NIS also stressed that it will not protect any officer found guilty of wrongdoing.
“The Service will neither shield nor condone any act that undermines public trust or violates the rights and dignity of individuals,” it added.
