The initiative, organised through the Ministry of Transportation, is aimed at improving driver fitness and alertness, particularly among truck and commercial drivers who play a critical role in sustaining Lagos State’s economy and logistics ecosystem.

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence a comprehensive health and safety programme for professional drivers operating within the state, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and protect lives and property.

The initiative, organised through the Ministry of Transportation, is aimed at improving driver fitness and alertness, particularly among truck and commercial drivers who play a critical role in sustaining Lagos State’s economy and logistics ecosystem.

According to the initiator of the programme, Hassan Adekoya, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics, the exercise is scheduled to run from Monday, February 9 to Thursday, February 12, 2026, across different locations in the state.

No fewer than 10,000 commercial drivers are expected to benefit from the programme, which will be implemented at four strategic locations: Iyana Iba, Obalende, Lekki Free Trade Zone Parks, and the Lilypond Bonded Terminal in Apapa.

The health and safety initiative will provide free eye screenings, medical consultations, corrective lenses, as well as substance abuse awareness and screening sessions for drivers. The programme is designed to promote responsible driving and improve overall road safety across Lagos.

The state government has called on transport owners, unions, and associations to support the initiative by sensitising and mobilising their members to participate, as well as facilitating access to major parks and depots for programme activities.

According to the government, the overall objective is to ensure that every driver departing from seaports, depots, and motor parks across Lagos State is physically fit, mentally alert, and visually capable of navigating the roads safely.

Drivers and stakeholders seeking further information have been advised to contact the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics.

The programme is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce road accidents and improve transportation safety across Lagos.
