Alex Iwobi has said Nigeria’s Super Eagles are still waiting to know their fate regarding qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as uncertainty continues to surround the team’s chances of reaching the global tournament.
The Fulham midfielder expressed cautious optimism while reflecting on Nigeria’s current qualification situation, stressing that the players remain hopeful of securing a pathway to the tournament scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico.
According to Iwobi, the possibility of missing the World Cup carries emotional weight for the squad, especially for players yet to experience football’s biggest stage.
“We are still waiting. Hopefully we can go to the World Cup,” he said, while admitting the situation remains difficult for the team.
Iwobi, who played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, noted that while winning the Africa Cup of Nations remains a major career achievement, many players in the current squad are eager to experience the World Cup for the first time.
Nigeria’s qualification path has remained complicated in recent months, with the team facing stiff competition in their qualifying group and needing favourable outcomes to boost their chances.
The Nigeria Football Federation is also understood to be exploring administrative and regulatory options related to qualification disputes, as the country continues to push for every possible chance to secure a World Cup spot.
