The Command assured residents that efforts are ongoing to bring the attackers to justice and urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police.

Suspected members of the Neo-Black Movement cult, also known as Aye, attacked Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday evening.

During the attack, many residents were injured, and the President General of the community, Chief Ikwuka Okoye, was killed. Another person was also reportedly killed, though the identity has not yet been confirmed.

The attack is believed to be linked to the recent killing of a known cult member, Emma Amasco, aged 25.

Reports said Amasco was involved in robbery activities in Onitsha earlier in the week, where he stole phones and laptops from members of the public. On Wednesday, he was arrested while trying to sell stolen items at Sir Emeka Offor Plaza in Onitsha.

Following his arrest, Amasco was brought back to Ogidi at the request of the community’s traditional ruler and the President General, Chief Okoye, who was determined to rid the town of cultism and violent crime.

During questioning, Amasco reportedly confessed to being involved in several killings and mentioned the names of some people in the community. He later died under unclear circumstances. His death angered other cult members, who allegedly vowed to take revenge on the community.

On Friday evening, armed men invaded Ogidi and killed Chief Okoye. Details of how he was killed are still unclear.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing. In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police expressed sympathy with the community and confirmed that investigations have begun.

The police said officers have taken control of the crime scene and are working with eyewitnesses and intelligence reports to identify and arrest those responsible.

The Command assured residents that efforts are ongoing to bring the attackers to justice and urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police.
