Nigeria’s Falconets claimed a vital first-leg advantage on Saturday after edging Senegal 1–0 in their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying encounter at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

The tightly contested qualifier saw both sides trade periods of pressure in the opening half, but resolute defending and missed chances ensured the score remained goalless at the break.

The breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart when substitute Kindness Ifeanyi rose highest to head home from a corner kick in the 50th minute, handing Nigeria Falconets a crucial lead.

Ifeanyi nearly doubled Nigeria’s advantage midway through the second half, but her effort was brilliantly denied by the Senegalese goalkeeper, who produced a full-stretch save to keep her side in contention.

Despite sustained pressure from Senegal Women’s U-20, the Falconets held firm, combining disciplined defending with controlled possession to protect their slender lead. Tactical adjustments by head coach Moses Aduku in the second half proved decisive, helping Nigeria manage the game and close out the win.

Nigeria, however, suffered a setback when striker Janet Akokoromowei was forced off through injury in the first half, raising concerns ahead of the return fixture.

Ifeanyi’s impact off the bench earned her the player of the match award, capping a performance that could prove pivotal in the two-legged tie.

The reverse fixture is scheduled for February 14 in Senegal, where Nigeria will aim to build on their narrow advantage and secure qualification to the next round.
