CAF CL: Rivers United eliminated after Pyramids’ 4–1 comeback in Uyo

Rivers United on Sunday lost 1–4 to Pyramids FC at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, in a match that highlighted both the resilience of the Egyptian champions and the challenges facing the Nigerian side.

Rivers United initially raised the hopes of the home fans when Stephen Manu unleashed a powerful long-range strike in the 33rd minute, giving the hosts a surprise lead and putting Pyramids under early pressure.

However, Pyramids responded with intensity and precision after the break. Mostafa Fathi restored parity in the 53rd minute with a composed finish following a well-placed pass from Mostafa Zico.

As Rivers United tried to regain control, a pivotal moment came in the 77th minute when a handball in the penalty area gave Pyramids the chance to take the lead. Marwan Hamdi stepped up confidently and converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The Egyptian side continued to dominate, exploiting spaces as Rivers United pushed forward in search of an equalizer.

Substitute Awda Al-Fakhoury scored his first goal for Pyramids in the 88th minute, before Nasser Maher added a fourth in stoppage time, completing a decisive 14-minute surge that left the home team stunned.

The victory lifts Pyramids to 13 points, ensuring they top Group A and confirming their place in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals with a game to spare.

Rivers United, now bottom of the group with just one point, are officially eliminated from the competition.

Pyramids will conclude their group stage campaign at home against Power Dynamos, knowing their knockout spot is already secured.
