Pope Leo XIV has condemned the recent deadly attacks in Nigeria, describing the loss of lives as “heavy” and calling on authorities to take urgent action to protect citizens from further violence.
In a post on his X handle, the pontiff wrote: “It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria, leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety of every citizen.”
The statement comes amid a series of violent attacks across the country, with Kwara State bearing the brunt. Between February 3 and 4, armed assailants attacked Woro and Nuku villages in Kaiama Local Government Area, leaving scores dead.
While police and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq have confirmed 75 fatalities, residents and local officials insist the true death toll exceeds 200, as bodies are still being recovered from nearby bushland. Survivors describe scenes of carnage, with homes and property destroyed in the attacks.
In response, President Bola Tinubu deployed additional troops to Kwara and declared a nationwide security emergency. An army battalion has been sent to Kaiama under a fresh operation aimed at restoring order. Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited Ilorin on February 7 to console state officials and affected communities.
