Such actions may lead to stricter screening processes, tougher visa conditions, and lower approval rates for other Nigerians who apply for U.S. visas and intend to travel legally.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned that Nigerians who overstay their U.S. visas may be putting travel opportunities for other Nigerians at risk.

In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the U.S. Mission stressed that following visa rules is very important to maintaining good travel access for Nigerians who visit the United States for genuine reasons such as education, business, tourism, and family visits.

The embassy explained that when travelers fail to leave the U.S. before their visas expire, it can raise concerns among U.S. immigration authorities.

Such actions may lead to stricter screening processes, tougher visa conditions, and lower approval rates for other Nigerians who apply for U.S. visas and intend to travel legally.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travelers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens. Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travelers, and families who travel responsibly,” the U.S. Mission said.

In addition, the embassy urged Nigerians to help fight visa fraud by reporting any suspicious activities.

It provided contact details for its Fraud Prevention Units in both Abuja and Lagos, encouraging the public to share credible information that could help curb abuse of the visa system.

The warning comes amid ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to reduce immigration violations and fraudulent practices. Officials say such violations can influence visa policies and affect how applications from certain countries are treated.

The U.S. Mission advised Nigerians planning to travel to the United States to strictly follow visa conditions, respect the duration of stay granted, and return home as required in order to protect future travel opportunities for themselves and others.
