Family announces burial plans for singer Nanyah

The family of Abuja-based singer, Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has announced arrangements for her burial.

Nanyah, 26, a native of Enugu State, died last month after a snake bite at her residence.

According to the family, funeral activities will begin on Tuesday with a service of songs at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Abule Oshun, Lagos.

A requiem mass and hour of hymns in her honour will hold on February 12.

On February 13, a wake keep will take place at the Nwangene family compound in Enugu, while her burial is scheduled for February 14 in her hometown. A thanksgiving service will round off the burial rites on February 15.

The announcement comes after a tribute held on Monday by members of the Amemuso Choir, where friends and family celebrated her life through songs and shared memories.

Speaking during the tribute, her brother described her as a resilient and exceptional person.

“She was exceptional in every set. From when she was little, she was always excelling in everything she does. I always say she was innocent and took innocent of this world. Nanyah excelled in everything, including music,” he said.

“She never ever gave up. Even until the day she died, she fought, but this country failed her. She went to two hospitals. It is terrible.”

Though not widely known in the mainstream music scene, Nanyah built a loyal following of nearly 40,000 on Instagram.

Her music cut across classical, jazz, R&B and soul.

She was a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Enugu, where she served as choir mistress at St. Mulumba’s Catholic Chaplaincy and was also a member of the Amemuso Choir. She also participated in The Voice Nigeria about four years ago.
