The newly created Anambra Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun operations, with its Head, Mr Atiba Ofen-Imu, seeking partnership with the Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

This is contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of NDLEA, Anambra State Command, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwosu, on Wednesday in Awka.

The directorate covers Anambra and Imo states.

Nwosu said that Ofen-Imu paid a courtesy visit to the NDLEA state commander, Mr Charles Onubogu, marking a significant step toward strengthening inter-agency collaboration and enhancing coordinated efforts in combating economic and financial crimes.

He said that the visit was also aimed at strengthening efforts at tackling drug-related offences within the zone.

Nwosu quoted the EFCC boss as saying that the establishment of the new directorate would bring EFCC’s operations closer to the people of Anambra and Imo states.

He said that the EFCC boss was hopeful that establishment of the directorate would improve response time in the fight against corruption, money laundering, property fraud, internet fraud and other financial crimes.

Nwosu said that Ofen-Imu emphasised that there was a strong link between financial crimes and drug trafficking, and that effective collaboration between the EFCC and NDLEA remained critical in dismantling organised criminal networks.

Nwosu also quoted Onubogu as congratulating Ofen-Imu on the successful take-off of the directorate, describing the development as timely and strategic for strengthening the security architecture of the state.

According to him, Onubogu reaffirmed the command’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with EFCC in the areas of intelligence gathering, investigation, and prosecution of suspects.

The two agencies reiterated their commitment to professionalism, transparency and a united front in safeguarding the socio-economic stability of Anambra and Imo states, according to Nwosu.

They also pledged to consolidate existing partnerships and explore new strategies aimed at curbing criminal activities across the zone, he said.
