There was tension at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday after security operatives allegedly attempted to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, immediately after he arrived from Cairo, Egypt.
The claim was made by El-Rufai’s Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, who disclosed the development in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle shortly after the incident.
According to Adekeye, the operatives approached the former governor as he disembarked from his flight and attempted to take him into custody.
He said El-Rufai refused to honour the request, insisting he would not follow the agents without a formal invitation.
“Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir El-Rufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation,” Adekeye stated.
Adekeye further alleged that during the confrontation, the operatives seized the former governor’s passport.
“They, however, snatched his passport from an aide,” he added.
The development comes amid growing political tension surrounding the former governor, who has in recent times alleged pressure and possible arrest threats from authorities following his fallout with the ruling party and government officials.
