A Divisional Police Officer in Katsina State, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, has been killed during an anti-cattle rustling operation in Rimi Local Government Area, in an incident that also left three suspected rustlers dead.
The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs confirmed the officer’s death on Friday, describing it as a painful loss in the ongoing fight against banditry and cattle rustling in the state.
The Ministry also disclosed that three suspected rustlers were neutralised during the joint operation involving security operatives and local residents.
According to sources in Rimi, community leaders, including the ward councillor, APC members, the Village Head of Karare and the District Head of Rimi, alerted authorities late at night about the presence of suspected rustlers in Magaji town under Maje-Gobir Ward. Upon verification, CSP Kabir reportedly mobilised his team and moved to the area to confront the suspects.
Residents of Magajen Gobir had organised to resist the invasion, leading to a confrontation that stretched into the early hours of the morning and coincided with Subh prayers. During the operation, a significant number of stolen cattle were recovered.
The rustlers reportedly retreated towards neighbouring Charanchi Local Government Area, passing through Kuraye town to Yanunko village, where another exchange of gunfire occurred. Two men and several young girls were said to have been shot in Magaji town during the initial attack.
Security operatives, supported by vigilantes, later re-engaged the suspects. CSP Kabir, who personally led the operation, was fatally shot after his service rifle reportedly malfunctioned during the gun battle. The suspected gang leader, identified as Maigemu, said to have rejected previous peace accords, was among those neutralised.
Three other security personnel injured in the operation are receiving treatment at Katsina Teaching Hospital.
The remains of the slain officer were conveyed for medical examination before being released to his family in Zaria, Kaduna State, for burial.
State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu, mourned the officer, praying for his eternal rest and describing his sacrifice as one that would not be forgotten.
He reaffirmed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to intensifying efforts to rid Katsina of criminal elements and restore lasting security across affected communities.
