President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially opened the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026), calling on officers to compete with honour, discipline and good sportsmanship. He warned participants not to see the competition as a “do-or-die” event.
The week-long sporting competition is taking place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Delta State. Teams from the 17 Zonal Commands of the Nigeria Police Force and the Force Headquarters in Abuja are participating.
BIPOGA began in the 1940s and has grown into the Nigeria Police Force’s main internal sports event. It is aimed at improving officers’ fitness, strengthening unity among commands and encouraging community engagement.
The President, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, said the Games are important for improving professionalism and operational effectiveness in the Force.
He stressed that national security is key to economic growth and social stability. According to him, officers must be guided by character, competence and good conduct, in line with this year’s theme: Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action.
Tinubu noted that sports help to build unity, discipline and readiness for duty. He said a physically fit and mentally strong Police Force is essential for national security.
In his welcome address, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assured participants of a successful and enjoyable tournament.
He highlighted Delta State’s experience in hosting major sporting events and said the Games are about discipline, teamwork and excellence, not just winning medals.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, described BIPOGA as an important platform for unity and professionalism.
He said modern policing requires strength, agility and mental toughness, adding that a fit officer is better prepared to serve and protect the public.
