A commercial bus driver has allegedly stabbed an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in Ojota, Lagos.

The incident involved a painted Volkswagen Caravelle commercial bus with registration number EKY 693 YK.

According to LASTMA, the bus was stopped because the driver was breaking traffic rules. The vehicle was carrying passengers along the Ojota–Ketu road with its door left open while moving.

Officials said the driver resisted arrest and tried to escape by driving over the road median. However, the bus developed a mechanical fault and stopped working.

After failing to escape, the driver allegedly became violent. He reportedly picked up a broken bottle from inside the bus and attacked the traffic officers. One officer was stabbed in the fingers of his right hand, suffering serious fractures and heavy bleeding. The driver then fled the scene.

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, said the bus was impounded according to the law. The injured officer was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Two of his fingers required immediate surgical repair. He is currently under close medical care.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the attack and described it as unacceptable. He said the police are investigating the incident and efforts are being made to arrest and prosecute the suspect.

He also warned commercial drivers to obey traffic laws, adding that LASTMA will continue strict enforcement to ensure public safety across Lagos State.
