Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan are an opportunity for Nigerians to rise above their differences.

In a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi said this rare overlap is more than just a coincidence of dates. It is a symbol of shared sacrifice, reflection, and hope for national renewal, especially at a time when poor governance has tested the country’s unity.

He noted that both seasons involve fasting, prayer, and gratitude. Obi wrote,

“Today, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks an extraordinary moment in Nigeria. For the first time in many years, Lent and Ramadan start on the same day. We may call this a ‘Double Fast’—a divine chance to transcend our differences and recognize our shared humanity.”

Obi added that as millions of Nigerians fast and pray, they are united in asking for God’s mercy to heal the nation. “This unique coincidence calls for more than prayer.

It also asks us to help the vulnerable, forgive one another, and practice self-discipline. Many will see this period as a spiritual reset for our troubled country,” he said.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to use the season for deep spiritual engagement, reminding people to consider the suffering of others. “May our prayers protect our nation, and may our sacrifices bring lasting peace and unity.

A Holy Lent and Ramadan Kareem to all. With prayer and resolve, a New Nigeria is possible,” Obi wrote.
