Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has stirred debate on social media after advising Muslims to prioritise helping family members and neighbours in need before donating to charitable organisations during Ramadan.
The actress shared the message in a post on her Instagram page, where she questioned the approach of some donors who contribute money to online non-governmental organisations while people within their immediate communities still struggle.
Afolabi asked whether individuals who sponsor feeding programmes for strangers had first checked on unemployed relatives, widows, neighbours and other vulnerable people around them.
“Did you check up on your family members, hungry neighbours, widow/widower and people who lost their jobs in your community to see if they need help with feeding during this Ramadan before donating to random NGO accounts online?” she wrote, adding the hashtag #charitybeginsathome.
She emphasised that although organised charity efforts are commendable, personal responsibility toward one’s family and close community should not be neglected, especially during Ramadan, a period known for increased generosity and compassion among Muslims.
