The youngest son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe is in police custody following the shooting of a gardener at his residence in South Africa.

South African police confirmed they are investigating a case of attempted murder after the incident, which occurred in an affluent suburb north of Johannesburg on Thursday.

Although authorities declined to officially name the suspects, several local media outlets identified one of the men taken in for questioning as Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe.

Images circulating on social media showed the 29-year-old in handcuffs being escorted by police officers shortly after the incident.

Police also disclosed that the gardener who was shot during the incident is currently in critical condition.

“The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and police investigations are underway,” police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said.

Bellarmine is one of the sons of Mugabe and his widow, Grace. He is the youngest child of the late Zimbabwean strongman, who ruled the southern African country for 37 years before he was removed from power in a 2017 military takeover.
