A fire outbreak on Monday rocked Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, triggering an emergency response from airport authorities and raising fresh safety concerns at Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub.

The incident was confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which disclosed in a statement on its X handle, that its firefighting team was immediately deployed to the scene.

“BREAKING: The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public of a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to contain the situation. No loss of life has been recorded.

“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement read.

While the cause of the fire has yet to be officially disclosed, emergency responders were seen battling to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the terminal.

Passengers and airport users were reportedly evacuated from affected areas as a precautionary measure, though authorities have not confirmed the extent of disruption to flight operations.

The development has sparked anxiety among travellers and aviation stakeholders, coming at a time of heightened traffic at the Lagos airport.

FAAN assured the public that safety protocols were activated immediately and that efforts were ongoing to bring the situation under full control.
