He stressed that transparency in the electoral process is crucial to strengthening democracy and maintaining public trust.

The Country Director of ActionAid, Andrew Mamedu, has raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the just-concluded FCT Area Council elections, saying several result sheets were tampered with.

Mamedu made the remarks on Monday while speaking on Arise Television’s “Morning Show.” According to him, election observers noticed that a number of result sheets showed signs of alteration, while some of the results uploaded to the official portal were not clearly visible to the public.

The elections were conducted over the weekend by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

At the end of the exercise, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in five Area Councils — AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Kuje and Abaji. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won in Gwagwalada Area Council.

Expressing concern about the conduct of the polls, Mamedu said observers reported cases where turnout was extremely low, with as few as seven voters recorded in some polling units. He also pointed out that although voting officially ended around 2:30 p.m., the uploading of results through the BVAS system was delayed until late in the evening in some areas.

He stressed that transparency in the electoral process is crucial to strengthening democracy and maintaining public trust.

Mamedu urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability and improved performance from INEC to ensure that future elections are more transparent, credible and reflective of the will of the people.
