The All Progressives Congress (APC) says last Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections served as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 general elections.
APC candidates won five of the six chairmanship seats across the FCT in the polls conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking at a post-election review meeting in Abuja, the party’s national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, said the results highlight the popularity of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He noted that the party’s strong showing in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), one of the capital’s most cosmopolitan areas, shows APC has wide support among Nigerians from different backgrounds.
“I am pleased because just days ago, one opposition leader predicted that whoever wins AMAC will likely win the 2027 elections. That prophecy was fulfilled on Saturday,” Yilwatda said.
He urged the newly elected APC chairmen to implement the Renewed Hope Agenda in their councils, maintain good relationships with local councillors, and ensure timely delivery of government programs.
Governor of Kwara State and chairman of the FCT APC campaign council, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, credited the party’s success to the leadership of President Tinubu and the national chairman. He also mentioned that the party would review the election documents for Gwagwalada Area Council, where APC lost the chairmanship, to see if the seat can be reclaimed through legal means.
“The people of Abuja have embraced the president’s policies and showed their support at the polls,” AbdulRazaq said, urging the chairmen to start working immediately and deliver results to their communities.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who served as secretary of the FCT APC campaign committee, said the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT made campaigning easier.
“The people could see what we have been doing in the last two years, which helped us gain their trust,” Kalu said. He also praised the campaign committee for their hard work, emphasizing that the president insisted on a well-organized and serious approach to the elections.
