Why I have an ‘uncommon relationship’ with Obasanjo – Charly Boy

Charly Boy has revealed the depth of his unique bond with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as an “uncommon relationship” rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and shared concern for Nigeria’s future.

Sharing on X, Charly Boy acknowledged that many Nigerians were surprised by his closeness to the former head of state.

“People wondered how someone who constantly challenges authority could be so connected to a former head of state,” he said. “But life is not always black and white. Sometimes respect and understanding build bridges where people least expect.”

According to the entertainer, Obasanjo recognized qualities in him often overlooked by others, courage, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to truth. In return, Charly Boy said he sees beyond Obasanjo’s military background and presidential title, acknowledging him as an elder who has endured war, leadership pressures, and national challenges while remaining resilient.

He emphasized that their relationship is private and not for publicity, with discussions often focused on Nigeria’s pressing issues. “We may argue, we may disagree, but respect is always intact,” he said.

The mutual regard between the two was most evident when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of Charly Boy’s autobiography, 999. The entertainer described the event as the most significant moment of his career, noting that it symbolized recognition and honour rather than a commercial milestone.

“That day was not about selling books,” he recalled. “It was about acknowledgement. It was about an elder saying, ‘I see you.’”

Charly Boy concluded that their connection demonstrates how bridges can be built in a divided nation, showing that respect and dialogue between strong personalities can set a powerful example for others.
