The National Assembly has officially postponed the resumption of its plenary sessions, which were originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The new date for the reconvening of both the Senate and the House of Representatives plenary is now Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
The announcement was made late Monday night by Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly. He explained that the shift in schedule was necessary to allow the key committees of the Assembly enough time to complete ongoing budget defense sessions.
In a statement, Ogunlana said:
“This is to inform Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members that the plenary session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 24th February 2026 has been postponed. The postponement is to enable committees of the Assembly to conclude ongoing budget defense sessions.”
He added that all members should take note of the new date and time for plenary resumption and ensure their availability for the session.
According to reports, committees from both chambers of the National Assembly have been actively engaging with various federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to review and defend their proposed budgets for 2026. These sessions are critical, as they ensure transparency and accountability in the allocation of government resources.
This development follows the presentation of the N58.47 trillion 2026 appropriation bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2025. The budget defense meetings allow lawmakers to ask questions, clarify allocations, and make recommendations before the bill is finalized and passed into law.
The National Assembly’s decision to postpone plenary underscores the importance of thorough scrutiny of the national budget and reflects the legislature’s commitment to ensuring that government funds are properly allocated and managed for the benefit of Nigerians.
